Torch Fired Enameling

Sunday, November 19 - 11am-2pm

Price $55
Ticket Link

Enameling is the process of fusing powdered glass material to metal to give it a smooth colored glass coating. You can combine colors to create an ombre effect, add wire to the surface to add texture and design, and so much more! In this workshop you'll learn the proper techniques of cutting, filing, cleaning and prepping the metal for the enameling process. You'll then have the rest of the class to play with the enameling techniques I'll teach you. You'll leave with several beautiful pieces. Some people use a kiln to enamel, but as purchasing a kiln can be expensive, I like to teach the skill using a propane torch. It's much more affordable to set up, and has some advantages over working with a kiln.
Instructor: Amanda Coburn

Price: $55 Copper
Price: $75 Silver

Ticket Link

This workshop is designed for those students who have previously taken Amanda's Intro to Metal Jewelry Workshop, and her Intro to Soldered Jewelry Workshop (Metalsmithing #1 & #2).

In this Intro to Bezel Settings workshop, we’ll be creating a bezel setting for a non-calibrated cabochon. You'll start with a cabochon, metal sheet and metal strips, and learn how to use the stone to form the perfect bezel setting for that particular stone. In the previous workshop, you learned pick soldering. This workshop will use pick soldering and learn a new soldering technique called chip soldering. You’ll learn about flux, oxidation, pickle, and more. You’ll learn how the metal behaves as it’s heating to the correct temperature to accept the solder, how the flux behaves, and what the metal looks like just before the melting point.

The price of this workshop varies, depending on the materials you’d like to work with. If you’d like to make a bezel setting in copper, the workshop cost is $55. If you’d like to make a bezel setting in sterling silver, the workshop cost is $75.

You’ll learn how the metal behaves as it’s heating to the correct temperature to accept the solder, how the flux behaves, and what the metal looks like just before the melting point! Once you’ve pick-soldered enough rings for this chain, you’ll have a nice grasp on torch soldering jewelry, and a lovely chain as well.
